Don Aiken
Class of 1974
Navy, 20+ Years
Graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1980. Completing S-3A fleet replacement training with VS-41 and reported to VS-28, NAS Cecil Field, in 1981. With VS-28 deployed aboard the USS Independence (CV-62) participating in operations supporting the multi-national peacekeeping forces in Beirut, Lebanon and Operation URGENT FURY in Grenada.
In 1984, reassigned to VS-41 as the Pilot Training Officer. In 1987 reported to Commander, Carrier Air Wing NINE as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Officer. With CVW-9 deployed to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and USS Nimitz (CV-69). While embarked participated in Operation ERNEST WILL.
Posted to the Naval War College in 1989 attending the Naval Command and Staff College earning an MA in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies.
In 1990transitioned to the S-3B with VS-27, NAS Cecil Field and was assigned to VS-22. Deployed to the Red Sea aboard USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) participating in Operation DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM.
Reported for joint duty with Commander in Chief, U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill AFB in 1992 as a Branch Chief for the Programs Division, Director of Resources, J8. Additionally, attended the Armed Forces Staff College.
Reported to VS-21 in Atsugi, Japan as Executive Officer in 1995. In 1996 assumed the billet of Commanding Officer. This tour included deployments to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf aboard USS Independence (CV-62).
In 1998, assigned to the Navy International Programs Office. While there, he served as a Country Program Director for various European countries supporting Foreign Military Sales and Security Assistance programs.
Reassigned as the Operations/Plans (N3/5) Officer for Battle Force Seventh Fleet in 2000. Deploying with the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) to the North Arabian Sea and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom, Fghanistan. Following this assignment assigned as Commanding Officer, NAF Atsugi, Japan.
Accumulated over 4,300 flight hours and 700 arrested landings in the S-3. Awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various campaign medals and ribbons.
His last active duty assignment was as Chief of Staff, Navy International Programs Office. Retired as a Captain Jan 1, 2006.

Vandenberg AFB, CA - Senior Instructor for all students entering Minuteman III CDB assignments. Twice offered USAF Academy faculty positions. Strategic Air Command (SAC) refused release.

Vandenberg AFB, CA - Section Chief for Operational test launch of SAC Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Host Base Liaison Officer for development of Space Shuttle facilities(Launch Complex & Harbor for external tank). All polar orbits must be launched from Vandenberg.
AF Operational Test Center, Kirtland AFB, NM Division Chief, Missile and Space Testing, Test all future , AF missile and space systems including Strategic Defense Initiative.Offered position with NASA but declined in order to conduct Air Base survivability test in Germany.
Bitburg AB, Germany -Test to conduct airfield ability to withstand conventional warfare in a chemical environment was cancelled upon the demise of the Soviet Union. I was in East Germany the day after the wall came down.Soviet military personnel had not been paid in some time and were hungry so the were selling uniform items.Once the borders were open capitalism flourished. Electronics and all state of the art goods were being sold on the medians of streets in major cities. Most sought after commodity in every city, with lines blocks long was FRESH FLOWERS. East German flower window boxes were filled for the first time in 40+ years.
