George W. Lumm III, 56, passed away May 3, 2006 in a Norfolk, Va. hospital.
He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree from San Francisco State University and later received a Master of Art degree from Central Michigan University.
Prior to attending college, George served in the U. S. Army, where he was a highly decorated member of the U. S. Army Band in Stuttgart, Germany.
His music career actually began at age 14 as a percussionist for the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Lumm was well known as a music teacher in Oscoda from 1980 to 1990. While serving as band instructor at Oscoda High School, the much heralded 1986 jazz band won the Michigan State Championship. Students of the OHS Class of 1984 selected George as their commencement speaker. Later during his years at Oscoda he also served as the Cedar Lake Elementary School music teacher.
After leaving Oscoda in 1990 for a new career as a teacher in overseas schools, George and wife, Christy, taught in Denmark, Italy, Jordan and Estonia. While in Estonia Mr. Lumm served seven years as the headmaster of the prestigious International School in Tallin.
In addition to loving his wife and son, George's interests included languages, fishing, music and gourmet cooking.
He is survived by his wife, who teaches and resides in Norfolk, Va.; his mother, Caroline James Lumm of Toledo, Ohio; a son, Conrad W. Lumm of Brooklyn, N. Y.; a brother, Roger Lumm and wife, Debi, of Granger, Ind.; two nieces and three nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Pamela Lumm, and by his father, George Lumm Jr.
