Stanford Bayard Gum, 76, of Oscoda died in his Florida condominium on February 27, 2005. Bayard and his wife, Sue, were residents of Oscoda and have been wintering in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Mr. Gum was born on July 18, 1928 in Buckhannon, W. V., the son of Walton Bright Gum and Gladys Ione Simons of Buckhannon.
He was a 1946 graduate of Buckhannon Upshur High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College. He also attended Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan.
He moved to Oscoda in 1952 when he served in the U. S. Air Force. He and Bob Carmack had the first drive-in restaurant north of Bay City, the Jet Drive-In, in Oscoda.
Bayard became a teacher of English and speech and a coach of debate and forensics at Oscoda High School. He led the first Oscoda debate team to the state finals, retiring from teaching in 1986 after 37 years.
Bayard was the first fishing charter boat captain in Oscoda. he organized the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and was its first commander. An avid hunter and outdoor sportsman, he was a member of the Oscoda Sportsman Club, Oscoda Golf Club and the Oscoda Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Gum (nee Wilfong); son, Dr. Kenneth B. (Marilyn) Gum of Traverse City, Mich.; two grandchildren, Zane and Zoe; daughter, Dana (Jim) Wright of Frederick County, Md., where she is an art teacher; and many brothers, sisters-in-law, cousins and loving friends.
