Janet Moffit '70 said:
MARIETTA -- Janet Lee (Jan Moffit) Brown, 57, passed on to her eternal home in Heaven on July 31, 2009, at her home in Marietta, ending a 23-year battle with Parkinson's disease.
Jan was born in Wooster on Jan. 4, 1952, to James and Norma Jean "Sally" (Hershberger) Moffit and grew up in Orrville. She graduated from Orrville High School in 1970, then she worked in the superintendent's office at OHS, while attending Wayne College. Jan was an employee of Columbia Gas in Wooster and Columbus. She lived in Columbus for five years, until her marriage to Rick Brown on Oct. 20, 1980, when she moved to Marietta, and worked for Marden Petroleum, until her disease forced her into early retirement.
In 1980, Jan founded the Southeast Ohio chapter of the Desk And Derrick Association, and she served as its president for several years. She also founded the Mid-Ohio Valley Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, and served as its past moderator.
She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Marietta and was involved in a women's Bible study group.
Jan expressed her commitment to Church and Community by serving as a sign language interpreter for the hearing-impaired, volunteering in the Care And Touch program, and providing friendship, transportation, and moral support for others in need.
Jan is survived by her husband, her loving son, Rich, who is a student at Ohio University, sister, Cathy (Randy) Kiser of Wooster and brothers, Doug and Ray Moffit of Orrville and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours and cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Aug. 29 at the First Baptist Church, 301 Fourth St., Marietta, at 1 p.m. with pastor David Bilyeu officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, N.Y. 10008-0780. Forms are available on his Web site.
