Graduation Year Class of 1978
Date of Passing Jul 31, 2013
About Curtis William Carlson died on July 31, 2013 from a massive heart attack while on a morning run, training for his 5th marathon. He always said that if he was going die while running… it better be on mile 1 rather than mile 13 and he got his wish that morning.
He was born July 2, 1960 to Dennis and Jeneale Carlson. He graduated from Orem High School in 1978, where he met his wife Susan Herbert Carlson. He served an LDS mission in 1979-81 in the Texas, San Antonio mission, afterwards marrying his sweetheart, Susan Herbert, February 5, 1982 in the Salt Lake City temple. They were married for 31 years. The first 10 years of their marriage they were blessed with 7 wonderful children.
He was preceded in death by his sister Carlene Campbell, brother-in-law Brent Herbert, in-laws Duane and Carol Herbert. He is survived in death by his wife Susan Herbert Carlson, children Kirsten, Christopher (Haley), Kimberlyn (Jeff) Allen, Corban, Britney (Trevor) Boulter, Alec and Alissa Carlson, his parents Dennis Carlson and Jeneale (Joe) Barns, siblings Miriam (Charlie) Pulham, Ken and Janelle Carlson, Dave and Toni Carlson, in-laws, Gary (Jeanette) Herbert, Connie (Steve) Ault, Linda Herbert, Tom (Karina) Herbert and Holly (Adam) Carter.
Curtis loved coaching and working with kids. He coached all his children in several sports for 25 years. Our family record was playing 95 ball games in one month…with no Sunday play and all 7 kids playing!
His favorite place to take his family on vacation was Disneyland, where they went several times. He lived by his motto "You are only young once but you can be immature forever" …which made him a favorite with all the kids he came in contact with. He had a talent for making others laugh and keeping things light hearted. His Kermit the frog impersonation was a family favorite!
At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Bishop in the21st Ward of the Orem YSA 2nd Stake. He loved the gospel and loved serving the students in his ward. They will be greatly missed by him!
Our last family activity together was running in the 4th of July 5k freedom run. All kids, in-laws and future in-laws participated. Because it was Susan's first race, everyone ran at her pace making it possible for the whole family to finish together, including their oldest daughter, who Curtis pushed in a wheelchair so she could participate.
He also loved officiating high school football which he did for over 25 years, and was currently serving on the board. Refereeing alongside his sons made it extra special.
Curtis was always the life of the party at work, home and at church. His laughter and lively spirit will be forever missed!
Funeral Services will be Monday, August 5, 2013, 11 a.m. in the Orem YSA 2nd Ward, 824 West 800 South, Orem. Family and friends may call at a visitation held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. or Monday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. both at the church. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
