Brian Bethea Smith, AIA 55 of Atlanta GA and Beaufort SC
passed at 2:45 AM the morning of August 20th after fighting a 9 month battle from Lung Cancer.
Brian was in the loving care of Hospice Atlanta and died in the arms of his Life Partner of 15 years Ken Sidwell.

Brian was born son of Dr. Hugh & Martha Smith in Orangeburg SC. Where he was involved in scouting and a member of St Andrews Methodist Church. After graduating from Orangeburg High in 1973, Brian continued his education at Clemson University, Sigma Nu Fraternity, graduating with his Bachelor Of Arts Degree in Architecture in 1977. Moving on to Atlanta GA and achieving his Masters Degree in Architecture and Real Estate Development from Georgia Institute Of technology in 1979.

Brian worked for Niles Bolton Associates in Atlanta for 10 years as one of the Lead Designers and Managers for clients including Post Properties, Selig Enterprises and Julian LeCraw Co. His concentration was Midrise Residential Units and Hotel Resort Properties. After 10 years of redefining the basic box, Brian decided to follow his passion.

Brian began his own firm in 1991. He was passionate about Residential Architecture and it showed in his work. Brian's personal style incorporated into each project lead to an amazing career. His focus was on New Construction Custom Homes and Major Renovations. His work was often published and also been featured on HGTV. Many AIA, NHBA and Crystal awards were won by his design. He was a well respected member of the Atlanta construction community.

He once said that he did not want a monument after death that people would feel obligated to visit in order to remember him. There are over 300 monuments of his design that have changed the landscape of Atlanta and the Carolinas. He was admired by countless friends, associates and clients. His devotion to his work and to his partner left no doubt as to the spirit and love he shared every day.

Along with his partner, Ken Sidwell they enjoyed their 2nd home on the Coosaw River in Beaufort SC. It was a place to reflect on his life, dream of his future, enjoy the sea and be close to his family. It was to be his final destination for retirement and at a later date his ashes will be spread there.

The Greatest Gift Is Love. Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Humility, Courtesy. Unselfishness, Good Temper, Guilelessness and Sincerity define the Spectrum Of Love, they also define Brian Smith.
We will miss him by our side but carry him in our hearts forever.

He is preceded in death by his Brother Hugh E. Smith Jr.
