About Denise Marie Lowery Hotaling, 42, died at her home. She had been ill with cancer for the past nine years.
Mrs. Hotaling's career began in 1978 when she became a dietetic technician and department night supervisor at the former House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown. She then was a clinical dietitian for several months at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Ogdensburg. She next became the administrative assistant to the Nutrition Department for the Utica and Marcy psychiatric centers.
In October 1981, she was hired to be chief clinical dietitian and food service director with United Helpers Management Co., Ogdensburg, a position she held at the time of her death.
In May 1986, Mrs. Hotaling was awarded the Young Dietitian of the Year Award by the New York State Dietetic Association. She was the author of the two articles titled "Dysphagia and the Feeding of Residents In the Institutional Setting," which appeared in the Journal of Dysphagia.
A presenter of numerous workshops and seminars at the local, state and national levels, she was also instrumental in developing a program with Pennsylvania State University to help United Helpers employees receive degrees in dietetics, serving as a mentor and director of that program.
Born May 11, 1957, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Vernon H. and Barbara Gibson Lowery, she attended Hammond High School and graduated from Orange High School, Hillsborough, N.C.
In 1975 and 1976, she attended the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, then transferred to Plattsburgh State University College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in foods, nutrition and institutional management in 1979.
In 1981, she completed a yearlong dietetic internship program with the state Bureau of Nutritional Services and the state Office of Mental Health. She also completed several workshops and seminars in the various fields of dietetics.
She married Hilton H. Hotaling Jr., a teacher at Morristown Central School, on June 18, 1977, at First Congregational Church.
Mrs. Hotaling was a member of the Seaway Valley, Central New York, New York State and American dietetic associations, the National Association for Female Executives and the St. Lawrence Valley Nutrition Council. She was a consultant dietitian for the Health Care Facilities Practice and Gerontological Nutrition Practice and enjoyed reading.
Surviving besides her husband and her parents of Brier Hill are a son, Brandon L., age 13, at home; a daughter, Chelsea M., age 10, at home; two sisters, Phyllis Lowery Marshall, Morristown, and Suzanne Lowery Slate, Darby, Mont.; a brother, Vernon A. Lowery, Hammond, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
