About Me | Roger McDonald Professor Emeritus Roger Dale McDonald, who marked his 32th academic year in 2008-09 as Professor of Music at The University of Montana-Missoula, holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Oklahoma-Norman, and a Master of Music degree in oboe performance from Yale University. His distinguished teachers have been Loel E. Briggs, Dayna Larason Fisher, Richard E. Killmer and the late eminent Robert Bloom. Professor McDonald formerly taught at The University of Bridgeport, Wesleyan University, Wake Forest University and The North Carolina School of the Arts. Professor McDonald has performed with numerous orchestras throughout his career. Those orchestras have included the Oklahoma City Symphony and Lyric Theater, Continental Army Command Band, the 264th Army Command Band of the Pacific and Honolulu Symphony, The New England Chamber Orchestra, The Connecticut Festival Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, New Britain Symphony, Waterbury Symphony, Bridgeport Symphony, Piedmont Chamber Orchestra, The After Dinner Opera Company of NY, Missoula Symphony, Great Falls Symphony, Helena Symphony, The String Orchestra of the Rockies, and The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra among others. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has toured nationally with The Edmonds-McDonald Duo, The Northwest Woodwind Trio, The Montana Woodwind Trio and Montana Woodwind Quintet. The U.S. State Department’s cultural exchange program engaged Professor McDonald as a member of The Clarion Woodwind Quintet to tour to South America; and with The Edmonds-McDonald Duo, he presented 34 concerts on tour to England, Germany, and Italy. Professor McDonald continues to maintain an active concert schedule performing on both oboe and saxophone. Many of his performances have been recorded and broadcasted on National Public Radio's 'Performance Today' concert series. He has recorded with the renowned Clarion Woodwind Quintet and The Northwest Woodwind Trio. He is in high demand as a woodwind adjudicator in Montana and the Northwest Region; he has served several times as a woodwind adjudicator for State, regional and national MTNA finals as well as the Spokane’s MusicFest Northwest. Professor McDonald’s active concert schedule as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician is balanced with diverse academic responsibilities at UM, which have included advanced music theory, aural perception, music history and woodwind method classes as well as teaching an applied studio of talented bassoon, oboe and saxophone majors. He has written two books during his UM tenure: the first book is a performance text used for his woodwinds method course entitled: “An Intelligent Approach to Teaching Woodwinds in Class (1994)”; the second book is a modern idiomatic and literal English translation of the complete collection of “J.S. Bach’s German Lutheran Chorale Texts (2006)”. In May 1998, Professor McDonald was recognized and honored by The University of Montana's School of Fine Arts as its distinguished and outstanding teacher of the year. The Board of Regents for the Montana University System bestowed the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus on him in September 2009.
