| About Me | Spurred by German classes taught by Mr. Mullally, Virginia (now, then Ginni), graduated with a German major from Smith College. She spent her junior year abroad at Hamburg University and the year after graduation in Berlin. Hearing a voice that said "Go West, young woman," she next went to Berkeley for advanced degrees in the History of Art, never to leave the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. After teaching a few years in temporary positions she was appointed Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of California in Santa Cruz in 1975. She retired in 2006. She served as chair of the department from 1983-1989 and 1995-1996. Her teaching ranged across her general specialization in medieval art, especially medieval and Gothic architecture, but also included courses in ancient art, campus architecture, and two lower-division courses, introduction to Art History (ancient-medieval western art) and to Architecture (viewed globally), which generated many individual majors in architecture, whose committees she chaired. Originally her research focused on English Gothic architecture of the thirteenth century, but later she expanded toward a pan-European perspective and also began a focus on German Gothic architecture. In addition to church architecture, she has researched late antique, medieval, and early modern urban and vernacular buildings such as dormitories, Hanseatic trading centers, and cellars across Europe. In addition to many conference papers, her scholarship includes over twenty articles and reviews for publications in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Belgium. She photographs avidly to illustrate her research. In retirement, she is trying to finish two books, Reform, Kingship, and Building: Ideologies in Architecture from Salisbury Cathedral to Westminster Abbey, c. 1216-1250, focusing on the patronage of King Henry III, and another currently titled, Medieval Urban and Commercial Architecture. The books emphasize political, economic, social, and cultural themes affecting architectural form. Her latest publication, due out in November 2010, is the chapter, "Light and Pure: The Templars' New Choir," in the book, The Temple Church in London: History, Art and Architecture, edited by David Park and Robin Griffith-Jones (London: Boydell Press). Her research takes her on many trips to Europe, one of which preclu...(read more) |
