Favorite School Memory There isn't one particular favourite high school memory. The exchange year (1966/67) was highly memorable from its first to its last day, and there is little else in my life that had such far-reaching consequences as that year in Novato.
About Me After my return to Germany in 1967, I continued Gymnasium, graduated in 1969 and went on to study English and German Language and Literature at Bochum University in Bochum, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. In 1975 I married a girl who, in scholastic year 1967-68, had been an ICYE exchange student in Oakdale, CA. We had met first when her foster family visited mine in the last weeks of my exchange year and the first weeks of hers – her foster mother was my foster aunt. Years later, at university, we met again by chance; life does play some tricks. After graduating with honours in 1976 I started Teachers' Seminary in Bochum, from which I graduated in 1978, whereupon I took up my first teaching post at Dortmund Evening Gymnasium, a night school for adults. In 1980 I transferred to Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium, a regular day grammar school teaching 10-19 year-olds, where I worked until my retirement in February 2013. Since then I have been sailing on the North Sea and adjacent waters in the summers (without my spouse, who left the sport for reasons of ill-health in 2000) and travelling (with my spouse) off and on the rest of the year.
