Carl was one of my best friends and a terrific runner. He got a medal at the Marin County track meet every year and went on to run cross country, including the DipSea race. He was crippled by an extremely powerful mine in Vietnam, and came home a very different person. His devotion to running continued in spite of severe leg injuries, coaching cross country at the high school, and was named to the DipSea hall of fame, even in spite of his very short racing career there. I remember him as a truly kind and charismatic guy . He was editor of the Nova, and the 1963 Nova has a lot more pictures of me than I deserve, thanks to Carl. Those who knew him still mourn his early passing.

I met Carl in 6th grade and we were somewhat friends all the way through high school. I ran into him January 1968 when I was home on leave on my way to Vietnam and was attending a Wrestling Match at NHS. I knew he had served and was wounded and I asked about his experience but he didn't really want to talk about it. I tried locate him when I got out but iwas returning to college and lost track of him. he wasn't at the 10 year reunion and shortly after graduation from Cal Poly was working out of state. As for being a different person I doubt very much that anyone who was on the ground in Vietnam came back unchanged . My sister was getting ready to graduate from San Marin and told me once she noticed that I wasn't the brother she knew whom went over. some of us changed more than others and I am sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to him. I can only say he was my brother and always will be as are the others who served on the ground, off shore and in the air. A quote I read from a vet who had PTSD was that his mother cried that she wanted her boy back and he responded that "he died in Vietnam".
