"PARISHVILLE – Douglas C. Spears, 71, a resident of Millyard Estates, passed away early Thursday morning, November 30, 2023 at the Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.



Douglas was born October 25, 1952 in Potsdam, the son of the late Francis Roy and Beaulah (Frank) Spears. He attended schools in Potsdam and graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School. In 1975, he entered the United States Navy, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1979. On August 13, 1988, he married Cynthia A. Nugent at the First United Methodist Church.



Doug was a cook for various restaurants including the Best Western in Canton, Massena Country Club, and Eben’s Hearth in Potsdam. He had a lifelong love of hunting, fishing, and boating, and was a member of the Flying A Hunting Club. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and will fondly be remembered for always teasing someone.



Doug is survived by his wife, Cynthia; his son, Jermey R. and Cassie Johnston of Potsdam; his grandchildren, Ian Michael and Parker Louise; his brother, Steven Spears of Potsdam; and sister, Barbara and Randy Sexton of Moss Point, Mississippi; and 4 nephews.



In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Bush; his nephew, George Bush, Jr.; and a niece, Rebecca Green.



Friends may call on Monday 3-6:00 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held privately in Pleasant Mound Cemetery, Colton.



In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in his memory to Autism Awareness."
