About Age 67 - Norwood - Joseph P. Mariano, 67, mayor of the village of Norwood, died Friday at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. Mr. Mariano retired Aug. 1, 1999, from Reynolds Aluminum where he was an electrical foreman. He had been active in village politics since 1978 when he first served as a member of the planning board. He was later elected a trustee and had served several terms as mayor, most recently since March 2000. Born July 11, 1937, in Utica, son of Joseph A. and Elena Perretta Mariano, he graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1955. He was drafted into the Army in January 1961 and was stationed in Virginia until his honorable discharge in 1963. He married Christine Mellon on May 20, 1961, at St. Andrew’s Church. He was a former member of the Norwood Fire Department and coached Babe Ruth baseball for a number of years. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, cooking, and was an avid New York Yankees fan. Surviving besides his wife are two sons and their wives, James T. and Stacy, West Henrietta, and Joseph and Kelly, Rochester; two daughters and their husbands, Margaret "Peggy" and Michael Boysuk, Potsdam, and Kathleen and Joseph Lemke, Hastings; a sister, Dolores Post, Norwood; a brother, Francis "Franny," Winthrop, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers; James and John, died before him. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Church with Monsignor Harry Snow, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Buck Funeral Home, Norwood. Donations may be made to the Playground on the Green Fund, in care of Village Office, Norwood, NY.
