About Age 96, (NNCS Music Teacher) -
Potsdam - Esther C. Scott died November 18, 2017, after a very brief illness. She was born in Nicholville, NY on November 28, 1920, the daughter of Wibur and Grace (Woodward) Clark. Esther graduated from the State University College at Potsdam in 1942 with a degree in music education. Her special campus memories included singing the Brahms Requiem with the von Trapp family, who joined the chorus in 1939, and singing the Faure Requiem in 1941 in Carnegie Hall. Subsequently, she received her Master's degree from SUNY Potsdam in 1959. Esther was a vocal/choral music teacher and taught for 31 years, first in Fleischmanns, then Norwood-Norfolk, Northport, and lastly in Rocky Point, all in NYS. She conducted the chorus for SUNY Potsdam's Crane Youth Music, was a recipient of a Ford Foundation Grant in Humanities at the University of Oregon, served 2 years as State Chairperson of Choirs for NYSSMA, and at different times was a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician. She also developed and spear-headed a creativity seminar in the arts that was held in the summer for three decades. It was her joy. Esther lived most of her adult life in Norwood and Long Island. In 2003 she moved to Potsdam, where she could be closer to family and enjoy the many offerings at SUNY Potsdam. She loved entertaining, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading, playing the piano, and spending time with relatives and friends. She loved life, lived it with gusto, and was a sterling example of a life well lived. Esther is pre-deceased by her parents, her three brothers and their wives, Manley (Marie) Clark, Hubert (Jean) Clark, and W. Russell (June) Clark; her loving son, Gary Scott, and all of her aunts, uncles and cousins. Surviving Esther are her daughter, Linda (Don) Mandigo, Potsdam, NY and son, Lauren Scott (Linda Bronfman), Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Lisa DeMarco, Mark Scott, and Martin Scott and a granddaughter of the heart, Glenda (Donovan) Collins-Duckett; three great-grandchildren, and three generation of nieces and nephews. Esther is sorely missed by her family and friends. There will be a celebration of her life on June 30, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Barrington Student Union, SUNY Potsdam campus. Memorial donations may be made to a scholarship fund in Esther Scott's name at The Crane School of Music, c/o Potsdam College Foundation, 44 Pierrepont Avenue, Potsdam, NY 13676 or online at https://secure.potsdam.edu/giving.
