About Age 23 - Terry R. Shantie, 23, Tiernan Ridge Road, who was stricken with polio in the St. Lawrence County epidemic in 1956, was declared dead on arrival at Massena Memorial Hospital at 9:15 o'clock Wednesday morning, Christmas Day, 1968. His step-mother, Mrs. Harold Shantie, found him in an unconscious condition and called the Norfolk Rescue Squad. Death was due to a respiratory arrest. He was stricken with polio August 5, 1956 at the same time a number of other young people in St. Lawrence County contracted the disease. He was 11 years old at the time. He was confined to the Alexandria Hospital, Montreal several months and the following January he was taken by plane ambulance to the Reconstruction Home at Ithaca. Despite the polio handicap he graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central High School and from Canton Agricultural and Technical College as a draftsman. He was employed as a draftsman for the Potsdam Welding and Supply Company. Surviving are his father and mother; two brothers; one step-brother; three sisters; one step-sister and the paternal grandmother. Burial was made in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Louisville, NY with his grandparents.
