About Age 61, (1968 - 2000) - Potsdam - Ann Elizabeth Schugart, 61, Potsdam, a winter resident of Ellenton, FL, died Saturday at her Florida home, with her family at her side. She had been ill with cancer for two years. Ann was a mathematics teacher at Norwood-Norfolk Central School from September 1968 until her retirement in June 2000. While teaching at the school, she served as chairperson of the mathematics department for 23 years and received Clarkson University's award for inspirational high school teaching in 1995. Born June 7, 1945, in Watertown, a daughter of Clifford A. and Doris J. Carney, Ann attended Holy Family Catholic School and was a 1963 graduate of Watertown High School. She received a bachelor's degree in secondary education mathematics in 1968 and a master's degree in 1973 from SUNY Potsdam. Ann married Gilbert Schugart on Aug. 17, 1968, at St. Rita's Catholic Church, Deferiet. She spent the winter months in Ellenton, where she was active with Colony Cove Hobby Club and Colony Cove Women's 9-Hole Golf League. Ann enjoyed boating with her husband, playing golf, needlepoint, working on craft projects, sewing and scrapbooking. Surviving besides her husband are a son, Richard, Columbus, OH; an aunt and several cousins. Her parents and her stepfather, Carl W. Sixbery, died before her. A funeral Mass will be Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bradenton, FL, with a reception to follow at Friendship Hall, Colony Cove, Ellenton. A memorial Mass will be at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Potsdam.
Arrangements are with Good Earth Crematory, Bradenton. Donations may be made to a hospice organization or the American Cancer Society.
