About | Age 65, (NNCS Faculty) - William J. Stone Sr., 65, South Shore Road, Old Forge, formerly of Prospect Street, Norwood, died Tuesday at Faxton-St. Luke's Health Care, Faxton campus, Utica. Mr. Stone taught science from 1962 to 1964 at New York Mills, where he also coached football. From 1964 to 1966, he was a physical education teacher at Hounsfield Central School, where he coached basketball and football. After completion of graduate work, he moved to Norwood and was a physical education teacher and athletic director for Norwood-Norfolk Central School, Norwood, from 1968 until his retirement in 1991. During that time, he coached basketball, cross country, and track and field. After his retirement, he continued to coach cross country and track and field. He also served as waterfront director from 1962 to 1971 at Camp Abnaki, a YMCA camp on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Born March 5, 1936, in Watertown, son of Willard and Doris Simmons Stone, he graduated from Watertown High School in 1954, served in the Coast Guard from 1954 to 1958, and graduated from Cortland State University College in 1962. He later received a master's degree from Springfield MS College in 1967. He married Joanne E. Waite on Feb. 5, 1956, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Watertown, with the Rev. Robert J. Sudlow officiating. Mr. Stone was an avid outdoorsman. Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Patricia Reyes, San Antonio, TX, Anne Moore, Columbia, MD, and Holly Lane, Vicksburg, MS; a son, William J. Stone Jr., San Antonio, TX, six grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A sister, Kay S. VanBrocklin, died Dec. 21. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. The body will be cremated. Entombment will be in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Columbarium, Watertown. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown. Donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, St. Phillip's Church, Norwood, or the Old Forge Rescue Squad. |
