About | Age 76 - gardena, CA - Lary H. Gibson, formerly of Norwood, passed away March 11, 2014, in Gardena, CA after a two month illness. Lary was born September 4, 1937, in Potsdam the son of the late Harry P. and Hazel (Dishaw) Gibson. His mother passed away shortly after his birth and he was raised by his maternal grandparents Noah and Amanda (Willard) Dishaw. At Norwood - Norfolk High School Lary was involved in many activities and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1955. He then graduated from Clarkson College of Technology with a degree in Physics. Following this Lary was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and then a National Defense Act Fellowship. Lary completed his PhD in 1965 at the University of Oregon. After taking several teaching positions, in 1969 Lary secured a professorship at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for over 30 years until his retirement in 2002. In addition to teaching, Lary was also a writer and poet. He completed two novels and wrote numerous poems. He even dabbled in the entertainment field, collaborating on a couple of scripts for the 1970’s television show Kung Fu and writing a proposal for a television series and a movie script. Lary was an active person throughout his life and enjoyed fishing, playing tennis and especially golf, going out for his last round two weeks before entering the hospital. Lary enjoyed camping, and took up fly fishing - even tying his own flies and making his own rods. Lary is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ann Donaldson; their daughter, Jennifer Gibson of Boston MA; two children from a previous marriage to Harriet Wright (Liotta), a daughter, Elizabeth (Michael) Adams, Pinellas Park, FL; and a son, Robert Gibson, of Norwood; a daughter, Juanita (Kenneth) Gilmore of Glendale, CA; four grandchildren, Laura Adams, Kandis Gilmore, Kenny Gilmore, and Gavin Aday; and two great-grandchildren, Penny McNees and Ayla Fuchs; and two brothers, Richard and Phillip. Lary was pre-deceased by his brother Gary. |
