Date of Passing | Feb 27, 2011 |
About | Age 50 - Lauri Jeanne Flint, 50, of 32569 State Route 26, passed away on Sunday afternoon, February 27, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at University Hospital in Syracuse. After being diagnosed with cancer, she received a stem-cell transplant from her brother, Stephen at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in May 2010. This transplant gave her another year and a half of precious life with her family and friends cancer free. Lauri was born on June 6, 1960 in Community Hospital in Hamilton, the daughter of John "Ray" and Frances E. Lent Barney. She attended grade school at St. Andrew's Catholic School in Norwood and graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1978. While in high school, she began to pursue her mother's dream of nursing, attending and graduating from BOCES to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Lauri married Roger R. Flint, a Fort Drum civilian employee, on April 5, 2003 at his home with Rev. Bruce Chapman, officiating. Lauri had a great passion of caring for others and nursing. She continued this passion even in the final weeks of her life, as she made over 30 little blankets for premature babies, which will be donated to the neo-natal unit at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. As a nurse she worked at a physician's office in Herkimer, St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica and at the hospital she was born, Community Hospital in Hamilton. Her dedication to others continued as a volunteer also, as she was a member of the MOVAC Ambulance Service while living in Herkimer for many years. It was through her custom made kitchen towels all finished with her signature button, a lady bug, that she was affectionately known as "Lady Bug" to many. Whether it be cooking or baking a wedding or birthday cake for someone, nursing or sewing, Lauri had such a great zest for life. Lauri is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Roger, who never left her bed side for the past year and a half; her only child, a daughter, who was the greatest joy in her life, Kristen Leigh Orlando, age 19 and currently a writing major student at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont; two step-sons, Duane Flint and his wife, Kristen of North Syracuse, and Casey Flint and his wife, Amanda of Brownville; four grandchildren whom she adored, Britney, Meghan, Alex and Hailey; her "grand-dog", Lizzy; her parents, Ray and Fran Barney of Massena and Webster, FL; her siblings, Maureen Hiliger of Webster, FL and Tyler, TX, Karen Osoway and her husband, Richard of Madrid, Kevin Barney and his wife, Sue of Hampton, VA, Michelle "Micki" Weller and her husband, Delton of Tyler, TX, Susan Barney of Tyler, TX, and Stephen Barney of Santa Rosa, CA; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Lauri was pre-deceased by her brother, Larry Barney. Friends may call on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Bruce Funeral Home, 131 Maple Street, Black River, where funeral services will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Bruce Chapman, officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in Great Bend Sunnyside Cemetery. The family kindly invites everyone to the Carthage American Legion, 415 West Street, Carthage, following the services until 4:00 p.m., to continue in sharing the joys of Lauri's life. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 132 West 32nd Street, New York City, NY 10001, which provided a home for her and her husband during her stay at Sloan-Kettering, the Black River Ambulance Squad, Leray Street, Black River, NY 13612, or a scholarship established in her name for an aspiring nurse at BOCES, in care of Memory Lane, 6022 St. Lawrence Center Mall, Massena, NY 13662. |
