About | Age 20 - Cpl. Bernard G Purvis, Jr. 20, loses his life in Vietnam. Norfolk - Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Purvis, Sr., Wheeler Drive, Norfolk, were informed Friday morning, Jan. 31, 1969, of the death of their eldest son, Cpl. Bernard G. Purvis, Jr. 20, in Vietnam. Funeral arrangements are in-complete at this time. When the body arrives, it will be taken to the home of his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Purvis, Main St., Norfolk. Corporal Purvis is survived by his parents, four brothers; Donald, with the US Navy at the Great Lakes Training Center; Thomas, John and Randy, all at home; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Corporal Purvis graduated from Norwood-Norfolk High School in June 1967. He enlisted in the Marines in Sept. 1967 and trained at Parris Island Camp Le Jeiine, NC. Corporal Purvis was home on leave from Dec. 23, 1967 until Jan. 14, 1968. He reported to Camp Pendleton, CA from where he left for Vietnam. Bernard received the Purple Heart twice since stationed in Vietnam. He was a member of the Norfolk Fire Department and a third generation member of the organization. Also a communicant of the Church of the Visitation in Norfolk and former altar boy. Corporal Purvis' year of duty in Vietnam was nearly completed. Last September, the Norfolk Marine was wounded at Mutters Ridge about 40 miles south of the demilitarized zone. He was only one of two survivors of a platoon of Marines. He was sent to the Da Nang Naval Hospital, the USS Sanctuary, Naval hospital vessel, for further medical care. Earlier in May of 1967, Cpl. Purvis fell and injured his shoulder and was confined to the Que Son Vietnam Hospital. At Mutters Ridge he was hit by Viet Cong fire in the chest and shoulder. |
