What is Abdihamid Nur known for?

Abdihamid Nur, a standout long-distance runner, is known for his exceptional performances in track and field. Born on October 14, 1998, in Mogadishu, Somalia, he moved around a lot as a child due to political instability in his homeland, eventually settling in the United States in 2006. His early education culminated with his graduation from North High School in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2017.

After completing high school, Nur went on to studiously compete for Northern Arizona University. It was during this time that he achieved his personal bests in several long-distance events, including the 1500 metres, 3000 metres, 5000 metres, and 10,000 metres. The most notable of these was the 5000 metres, where he set a United States collegiate record with an impressive time of 13:05.17 in 2023.

While representing Northern Arizona University, Nur earned numerous accolades. At the NCAA Cross Country Championships, his team secured Gold in 2020 and 2021, and Silver in 2019. At the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2022, Nur emerged as a champion in both the 3000 metres and 5000 metres events.

Nur turned professional in 2022 and joined the Nike team. That same year, he broke Henry Rono's 5000 m collegiate record from 1978 at the Sound Running Track Meet. He also secured his first national title at the 2022 USA Road 5k Championships. Furthermore, Nur represented the United States, finishing third at the 2022 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and placing 11th in the 5000 metres Final at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Throughout his illustrious career, Abdihamid Nur has shown remarkable talent and determination, making him a notable alumnus of not only North High School but also Northern Arizona University.
