Alumni Stories
Doug Branham
Class of 1961
Having grown up on a poor, small farm in Dublin and never having traveled very far from Maryland, I joined the Navy to "see the world". I did get to see Alaska, Hawaii and Guam but that wasn't enough. I got my mechanical engineering degree from the University of Maryland and went to work for Amoco and Texaco. That and a post retirement position took me to almost all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Trinidad, Jamaica, Indonesia, Thailand, England, France, Holland, Germany, Jordan, Israel, Kuwait, Turkey, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan. It has been a dream come true but I would like to see more. I must credit North Harford High School and a few teachers who showed a personal interest in me and gave me some critical tools for life: Messers Pastelak, Keith, Garbacek and Mrs. Wiley and Rowan. They are mostly gone but not forgotten.
