Major Homer Lucien Somers Obituary

Homer Somers, 90, passed away on January 11, 2012 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Newport Vermont on October 22, 1921, and was the son of Henry E. Somers and Dorcas Desaulniers Somers.

Homer graduated from Newport High, class of 1940 and Norwich University in 1947 (class of 1944). He served in WWII and remained in the reserves as a major for 20 years.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Helga Mueller Somers, a son, Henry Kurt Somers, sister, Joyce Somers Mundell and half sister Ruth Dearborn Somers.

He is survived by his daughter Heidi Somers, son Hans Somers, granddaughter, Erika Somers, second wife Alma Schmelzenbach Somers and three step sons Lothar, Christopher and Thomas Schmelzenbach all of Tinmouth, Vt.

Homer taught at a military school in Terrell Texas for two years, then worked at the Ansonia Sentinel as an assistant to the publisher in Ansonia, CT for nine years. He retired after 22 years from Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., a subsidiary of Dow Jones Co., as director of National Advertising Sales.

He was a faithful Rotarian for over 60 years and an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He attended just about evey high school and college reunion.

Homer continued to travel the world right up to his death. He was a dedicated family man and friend and will be missed.

Homer will be buried at Arlington Cemetary on April 19th, 2012.
