Served aboard USS IOW JIMA (LPH-2) a helicopter carrier that served as an assault ship with Marines aboard and a med-space station with six flight surgeons on board. While playing tag with a Russian trawler in the Gulf of Tonkin, we were told to deadhead south to pick up Apollo 13 when it returned to earth. That made my time in the service pretty exciting.

Army reconnaissance Sergeant. After Vietnam I have come to realize there is a very high price for freedom. I wish no generations must face the decision to go to war. There will always be a bully nation that will try to dominate. When your swearing at God on the battlefield, you come to realize Man makes war not God !

My IIS deferment went flying in 1967 and so did I (I didn't have a bone spur!). From Pullman, I flew to Fort Lewis for nine weeks of basic training. I got an expert badge on an M-14 and then flew to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey for seven months of Fixed Station Transmitter School. I got a First Phone degree at Monmouth. I then drove my 1960 Bug to Albuquerque. I was there for seven weeks. Turned out they didn't need me there. So, I waited for orders.
After ten weeks, orders came. "You are going to Viet Nam troop! Pack your stuff!". The next day, with my stuff packed, new orders came. I was to have three weeks leave, and then fly to Izmir,Turkey. Seems a NATO outfit needed me to help man a very large transmitter site. Nam was out and Izmir was in.
I was in Izmir for two years. I made E-5 after one and half years in the army. What a trip for a North Side Boy. Izmir was great. Roman ruins were all over the place as well as Greeks ruins. I found a cheap Lambretta Scooter and got my Turkish driver's license. I was turned loose on Turkish hiways.
Have you ever driven down a Roman paved road at 10 in the morning? I did that in Ephesus with hardly any people there.
At the end of three years I was let out of the army while still stationed in Izmir. So, from Izmir I flew to Rome. Later, from Rome, I took the train to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England. After ten weeks of this, I flew out of London to New York, City. From New York I flew to Pullman and finished what I had started in 63. Then I flew to Wenatchee and taught English at Wenatchee High school for 27 years. I've been retired for 24 years. The years are flying away. Have you noticed?
