About	I know this is a day late and a dollar short---which is just the sort of phrase Madame would have made her students find the French (or Latin!) idiom for---but I had to offer tribute to one of the greatest influences in my life. When Madame would say to us, "When you go to Rome, " or "When you go to Paris," we would giggle and say, "Madame, we're from North Brookfield!" And she would gently but firmly remind us that the world is getting smaller, and that studies like French (or Latin!) help to shrink it, and that it was highly likely that we would all, indeed, leave North Brookfield for parts far away. In 1980, I went to Italy. I came back several years later for NoBro's 175th birthday celebration. Madame was selling t-shirts in Tick's Barber Shop. I rushed in and announced to her, "Madame! I've been to Rome!" She was one of the most important influences in my whole life, and I think of her frequently. Those of us whose lives were enriched by her high standards and requirement for excellence were fortunate, indeed.
