Favorite School Memory | Miss Lanigan (junior English), suggested that I write a weekly column, on NHS news, for the Newton Graphic. She must have seen something in me that I certainly didn't. I didn't write the column. Ten years would pass before I got a job in journalism, but it wasn't my last - not by a long shot. Thank you, Miss Lanigan, for seeing what I wish I'd seen. You were truly memorable. For sheer entertainment, Dan Koughan (Social Studies teacher), standing on his desk and ge...(read more) |
About Me | After graduating from Boston University, worked as a copywriter in several Boston ad agencies. Bad career move. In 1965, joined the staff of the Gloucester (MA) Daily Times as Rockport correspondent/reporter, and went to a larger paper later that year. In 1967, landed a job on the editorial staff of Sports Illustrated (and moved to NYC), where in 19 years (15 as a staff writer) published some 200 stories, having conducted thousands of interviews, in 38 states and many foreign countries, and having experienced greater job highs (yes, there were lows) than I'd ever thought possible in a job. In the 90s, back in Boston, for seven years was Senior Writer/Editor for the Boston Harbor Project, one of history's largest environmental engineering projects, where I wrote and edited newsletters about project people. Was it Goethe who said, "There are masterpieces in the most commonplace lives"? In 1996, married Susan Zoino, now a professor of English and composition at White Mountains Community College, up the road from our Shelburne, NH home. In the early 2000s, for three years, was editor and principal writer for Conservation Matters, the journal of the Conservation Law Foundation - New England's largest environmental advocacy group. Also, over the years, published free-lance articles, stories and essays in, among other publications, The Boston Globe (sports section and Sunday Magazine), Boston Magazine, Yankee Magazine, Outdoor Life, and Salt Water Sportsman. Not currently collecting a paycheck, but don't like the word retired. Writers never retire; many "notes" are collecting in the old hard drive. Very busy: staying in shape, fishing (not to be confused with catching), whitewater canoeing, hiking (Mt. Washington is just up the road), devouring books of all kinds, cooking semi-gourmet natural-food dinners, for myself, Susan, and adventurous friends we can lure this far north (You've heard of the Arctic Circle?), burning up the internet and telephone lines with e-mails and calls, to friends new and old, and greatly appreciating occasional forays to Boston and NYC. Shelburne is very beautiful, but its chief shortco...(read more) |
