Mr. Hontz was a great instructor and powerfully influenced me in musical performance. I got to play the tympani for his Wind Ensemble, and I still remember his focus on tempo and dynamics. Because of Mr. Hontz, I continued studying music in college while I was learning to be an engineer.
I went on in college to perform on drum-set in the Jazz Ensemble and later in Percussion Ensemble, and studied percussion for 4 years under the guidance of Master Percussionist Dr. John Floyd. I continued performing in small bands around Washington DC from the early 80's through today. I have sung the "National Anthem" on so many occasions - and before I begin, I take a deep breath, and I imagine Mr. Hontz counting us into that deliberate tempo...

I was a member of the concert band and class of 1974, holding second chair clarinet. I remember Mr. Hontz as a very good conductor and man. I shall miss him.
