| About Me | I was born and raised in Detroit, MI. At the age of 19 years old, I fell in love with a girl who already had a child. She and I dated for almost a year before I got her pregnant. The responsible thing I was taught was that “I had to marry her since she was having my baby.” I got married the day before my 21st birthday. Soon thereafter, I became addicted to crack-cocaine and began shoplifting to support my addiction. In 1991, at the age of 26, I was sent to prison where I served more than 10-13 years for a non-violent offense of shoplifting (retail fraud – 4th habitual): last conviction in 1995 involved a pair of gym shoes and a set of bed sheets – nothing close to what Actress Wynona Rider was convicted for. After being denied parole six (6) times, being placed in segregation for more than 18 months; where I was abused in many ways only because I am a black intelligent man who helped other prisoners file grievances and litigations. The prison administration and guards did not like my prison reform activities, and as a result, I was called degrading and racist names, assaulted by prison guards, tied to the bed, feed food loaf on more than two occasions, placed on water restriction, paper restriction, grievance restriction, forced to “use the bathroom on myself and issued false and retaliatory tickets to prolong my incarceration. I was released from prison to parole on September 23, 2004. I had heard that America Works, Inc. opened an office in Detroit the same month I was released from prison. America Works has been successful for over two decades in cities across the country, providing 100% performance based employment services to individuals transitioning from dependence upon public assistance to the world of work and self-sufficiency. See. “Streaming Videos” at: www.americaworks.com. On October 6, 2004, Dr. Charles G. Adams, Senior Pastor of the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, in Detroit, prayed a very lengthy prayer (with me via phone) that, “God would intercede and help America Works help find me a job.” (I met Dr. Adams while in prison. He came into the prison and preached a sermon that changed my life. This is the same Dr. Adams that did the Invocation at Mrs. Rosa Parks’ funeral and thanked God in every language for Mrs. Parks. Dr. Adams is my spiritual father, mentor and leader. He has never turned his back on me. And, despite the fact that he pastors close to 13,000, he is never too busy to personally take the Word of God into the jails, prisons and institutions across the world.) After the prayer, Dr. Adams told me, “Ok son, be there on time, and God will meet you there!” On October 7, 2004, I arrived to America Works at 11:00AM; dressed for success - in a suit and tie just like MLK and others who marched for our civil rights. At about 11:20AM Dr. Lee Bowes, the President & CEO of America Works walked right up to me; without hesitation and hi...(read more) |
