After a stellar high school basketball career, initially at Laney High School and later at New Hanover High School, Allen moved onto college basketball. He first played for Hutchinson Community College, where he exhibited exceptional skills with a freshman average of 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the 2012-13 season. As a sophomore, he was impressive with an average of 25.9 points, 5.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game, and was named Junior College Player of the Year in 2014. He ended his college career at the University of Arizona, where he averaged an admirable 9.8 points, 1.6 steals, and 4.0 rebounds per game in his senior year.
