George Edward "Bo" Shepard, former head basketball coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels

George Edward "Bo" Shepard, an alumnus of New Hanover High School, Wilmington, North Carolina, was a celebrated American basketball coach, best known for his tenure as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team from 1931 to 1935. Born on September 18, 1904, in Florence, South Carolina, Shepard's lifelong passion for basketball began during his time at New Hanover High School.

Before Shepard took over the coaching reins, his brother, Norman Shepard, served in the same position, making them the only pair of siblings to have ever coached the North Carolina men's basketball team. Additionally, two of his other brothers, Carlyle and Alex Shepard, played basketball for North Carolina, demonstrating the family's deep roots in the sport and at the university.

Shepard's career saw some significant achievements, including leading his team to an impressive record of 69 wins and only 16 losses. Under his leadership, the North Carolina team emerged victorious in the Southern Conference regular season and the Southern Conference tournament, both in 1935.

Shepard's coaching was also marked by his ability to nurture talent. An excellent example of this is Ivan "Jack" Glace, who under Shepard's guidance transformed from an awkward beginner to an all-conference player by his senior year, a testament to Shepard's coaching prowess and dedication.

Besides his coaching tenure, Shepard is also known for his unyielding adherence to the rules of the game. He was part of an era where there were no athletic scholarships or grants-in-aid. All his players were hardworking students who balanced their studies and part-time jobs with their love for the sport.

Bo Shepard passed away on May 8, 1983, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Yet, his passion for the game, his commitment to his players, and his contribution to North Carolina basketball continue to be remembered and celebrated to this day.
