About | Robert Steven “Steve” Denney, 67, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2021 at his home after battling a rare, aggressive form of brain cancer. Steve was born on October 31, 1953 in the small town of New Castle, Indiana to the late Robert E. Denney and Maxine V. Denney. Steve was a devoted father and a humble man of faith. He had the will to change the world and the drive to achieve the largest dreams. He was generous, kind, and a true man of his word. Steve was always willing to mentor anyone who needed advice in many different areas of life, from faith to career. Since the age of 12, Steve was a highly motivated individual and always had a job. Once he started in the workforce, the man never stopped and never gave up. Throughout middle school and high school, Steve caddied at Westwood Country Club, car-hopped (waiter) at Crider’s Drive-In, sacked groceries at Becker Bro.’s grocery store, then pumped gas and changed oil at Kenny’s Shell station. After his stint as a jack-of-all-trades, Steve began his geospatial career, which would serve as his one true love, second to only that of his love for his wife, April, and his children. His geospatial career began at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as a land surveyor. Steve was later recruited to Huntsville, after serving several different management positions at a number of engineering firms (Midstate Engineering, Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, etc.) in 1987 and later purchased Atlantic Aerial Surveys, which would become the Atlantic Technologies. He was a true visionary in the industry, setting the bar high as he mapped throughout the world. Steve grew Atlantic to become a nationally recognized company and himself became a leading figure within the industry. Steve was a founder of many businesses, including The Atlantic Group, LLC, The Ledges of Huntsville, and Mezza Luna. He deeply valued his community, and served as an integral part of both the Huntsville and greater Alabama communities. Never one to complain or think of work as a chore, Steve was invested in each of his businesses and prided himself on knowing not only the business, but greatly enjoyed the relationships he built with colleagues along the way. Outside of work, Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, music of all kinds, flying, spending time with his family, and the University of Alabama athletic program. He was a man of love, a man of courage, a man of God - truly one of a kind, who made this world a better place during his time here. Steve is survived by his wife, April Farley Denney; three children, Kimberley Lynn Denney (Madelyn Chesser), Dr. Katie Denney Windle (Christopher), and Christopher Thomas Bland (Nicky Givens); one grandchild, Scarlet Bland; three siblings, Douglas Denney, Ronnie Denney (Kim), and Debbie Ferrell (George); and was adored by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Gary Denney and Connie Denney. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Steve’s exceptional medical team: Clearview Cancer Institute, both the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuro-Oncology at Columbia University, and both Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuro-Oncology at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 20, 2021 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at The Church of the Nativity, Episcopal. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the R. Steven Denney Brain Cancer Research Fund at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Donations may be made on-line at: https://go.uab.edu/RStevenDenneyBrainCancerResearchFund or checks may be made payable to UAB Neurosurgery (with “R.
