About | Shelley Ann (Piva) Carvalho, 57, of New Bedford, passed away suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital, peacefully and surrounded by her family and dear friends. Born in New Bedford and a lifelong area resident, she was the daughter of Terry (Baptiste) Piva of New Bedford and the late Robert Piva. A longtime public servant, Shelley worked for the City of New Bedford's Department of Community Services and Council on Aging as an assistant project manager and mediator, where she was a friend to her colleagues and the city residents she served. She had previously worked for the Town of Dartmouth, the New Bedford Economic Development Council and Commonwealth Electric Company. She was a proud alumna of New Bedford High School. Shelley was an avid reader who pored through several books a week, and she enjoyed being outdoors and swimming at the beach. She loved spending time with her family, her many, many friends, and her beloved dog, Phoebe. Shelley was a talented cook who provided countless meals to her family during the holidays. She will be fondly remembered for the many happy, fun times she shared with friends and family, and notably her captivating, memorable laugh and beautiful smile, both of which brought out the best in everyone whose lives she touched. Because of her thoughtful and outgoing nature, Shelley had an uncanny knack for making friends within a few minutes, nearly everywhere she went. A devoted mother, she is survived by her son, Jonathan Carvalho, of New Bedford; her mother, Theresa, and her companion Charles Williams, both of New Bedford; her sister, Angela Piva Shamir, and her husband Roey, both of New York, N.Y. ; and a wide circle of friends and family, including the legendary Piva family and matriarch Aunt Lillian (Piva) Souza, as well as her extended Costa family. She was the former wife of Stephen Carvalho and she is survived by her uncle and aunt by marriage, Agostinho and Elsie Gonsalves, all of New Bedford. Shelley was a light in the lives of all the people she knew. She will be sorely missed by her mother, son, sister, and the many friends and family members with whom she shared her life. Her family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth Street, Dartmouth. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford. Donations in her memory may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Prince Henry Society of Massachusetts' New Bedford Chapter, P.O. Box 6726, New Bedford, MA 02742.
