About | BRIAN'S OBITUARY U.S. Veteran Brian Francisco Duarte, 68, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on the evening of May 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Urbano and Lydia (Magellan) Duarte, Brian was a proud graduate of New Bedford High School. Following graduation, he embarked on a distinguished path of service, enlisting in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. Later in life, after nearly two decades away from active duty, Brian rejoined the Massachusetts National Guard, answering the call to serve once more during the Iraq War in the early 2000s. His dedication and bravery earned him numerous medals, badges, and decorations throughout his military career. In addition to his military service, Brian worked full-time as a correctional officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, continuing his lifelong commitment to duty and public service. Outside of work and service, Brian found his greatest joy in life’s simple pleasures—being outdoors, playing his guitar, listening to music, and spending time with the people he loved most. He was happiest surrounded by his family, sharing stories, laughter, and good company. Brian is survived by his five children, Jarrid, Adam, Ryan, Caleb, and Abigail; his three daughters-in-law, Sara, Susan, and Dawn; his cherished grandchildren, Raegan, Dakota, Gauge, Noah, and Cade; and his dear brother, Tom and his wife Paula. His legacy lives on in their hearts and in the countless lives he touched with his strength, humor, and unwavering devotion. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday June 4th at 9 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday June 3rd from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com. |

Sad to hear of Brian's passing. Worked with Brian and went to school with Tom. Knew his parents. Wonderful people. His Mom made me a couple dozen tollhouse cookies on my birthday.
You will be missed.
