About | NEW BEDFORD - The Rev. Ellsworth B. McAfee, 92, of Fairhaven, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at the Oaks in New Bedford. He was the husband of fifty-two years of the late Eleanor V. (Daley) McAfee. Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Thomas D. and the late Edith (Moore) McAfee, he settled in Fairhaven sixty years ago. The Rev. McAfee graduated from New Bedford High School in 1934, received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Nazarene College in 1950, and his Master's degree from Boston University in 1951. He was Ordained on July 1, 1950, at the People's Christian Church, when it was located at 268 Cottage Street in New Bedford. The Rev. McAfee served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a sergeant during WWII. He later taught school at Normandin Junior High School in New Bedford for twenty years, retiring as a guidance counselor from New Bedford High School, where he worked from 1972 until 1981. He was the pastor of the Somerset Friends Meeting House, as well as the assistant pastor of the People's Christian Church, until he was made pastor in 1978. Mr. McAfee enjoyed singing, taking trips to New Hampshire, attending the Red Sox games, and especially enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports. He is survived by a daughter, Jo-Ann Brierley and her husband Thomas of New Bedford; two grandsons, Matthew Brierley of Boston and Joel Brierley of Fairhaven; a brother, The Rev. William R. McAfee of New Bedford; a sister, Barbara E. Voisine of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. The Rev. McAfee was the brother of the late Thomas and Charles McAfee and Alfreida Grew. |
