About | William E. Chapman, 83, of Jupiter, Florida, and New Bedford, MA, died Thursday, February 17, 2011, in West Palm Beach Florida. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, William was the eldest son of William and Marion (Hart) Chapman. He was the loving husband of Madeline (James) Chapman. They were wed on February 14, 1953 and shared fifty eight years of marriage. William attended New Bedford Public Schools. He left school at age seventeen and enlisted in the United States Navy to serve during WWII. William served on the USS Oakland. William was honorably discharged on August 2, 1946, in the rank of Seaman First Class and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal. Following his enlistment he attended Newman Preparatory School in Boston. He was accepted to Boston University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College. William was employed by the New Bedford Public School for thirty five years. He served in various positions retiring as the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel. He served on the Board of Directors for the New Bedford Credit Union, as a Trustee for Bristol Community College, and as president of Indian Creek Condominium Association. William was athletic and enjoyed sports throughout his life. As a youth he played football for the Murphy Club, baseball for Aerovox and the New Bedford City League, and tried out for the Boston Braves. William was a high school football official for years. He loved playing golf and was most recently a member of the Fall River Country Club and the Indian Creek Country Club. He was the husband of Madeline J. Chapman, father of David J. Chapman, Lynne A. Weir and her husband Brian, Mary Chapman, and the late Donna J. Chapman, grandfather of Matthew J. Chapman and his wife Debra, Ryan W. Carreiro, and Andrew C. Carreiro, brother of Robert F. Chapman and his wife Diane, John D. Chapman and his wife Donna, and uncle of several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Jupiter Medical Center, 1210 South Dixie Highway, Jupiter, FL 33458 or Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 24th at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. His family will receive guests on Thursday morning from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. |
