About Me | Favorite Quote: "God made wrinkles to show where smiles have been." Some people go through their entire lives not finding true love, but I am blessed and thankful to God that I have had two of the most wonderful men in my life! When I met my first husband Brendan Coughlan in the summer of 1974, he was working as a bartender at Jerry Lynch's Erin Hotel in Belmar, NJ and I was enjoying my summer off from teaching 3rd grade. We met in July at a St. Patrick's Day parade spaghetti dinner fundraiser at Lynch's. I later found out that he was no more a bartender than I was...he was a building contractor from NYC who came to the shore to take a break. Well, it was MY lucky break. Whirlwind romance...met in July, asked me to marry him in September, engaged in December and married on March 29, 1975. When our daughter Shanna Mauvreen was 3 years old, we found out that Brendan had acute leukemia. He "fought the good fight" and was in remission waiting for a bone marrow transplant from his brother Michael, a perfect match, when he died 10 months later on October 20, 1983, a week after Shanna's 4th birthday. I hadn't planned on marrying again, but God had other plans for me. In the fall of 1985, I met the father of one of my 4th graders at "Meet the Teacher Night." George Smith was a retired pilot who worked for the Rockefeller family until he contracted Multiple Sclerosis. Although the disease robbed him of his vision, it didn't rob him of his humor or his unwavering faith in God. We married on December 18, 1992 surrounded by family, friends and many students I had taught over the years and had a busy life together until the MS took over in 2001. To my shock, George's heart gave out on April 17, 2004. I am so grateful that he loved my daughter as his own and that I had a 2nd chance at love. After George died, I relearned something about myself which I pretty much knew all along: I'm strong and I have a strong faith, but I shut down and disappear when I need time to heal and rediscover myself. I think that's how I've been able to survive the pain. I am so proud of Shanna (I did something right!) and simply love being a grandmother. When I retired from teaching in 2005 (I really fell apart after George died, but hung in there one more year), I used to say to people, "The ONLY kids I want to be with are my own grandchildren!" Although I currently have a "significant other" who I believe God put in ...(read more) |
