Class of 1966
Air Force, 20+ Years

Joined the Air Force while still in high school under the 6 month delayed enlistment program. Wasn't going to go to college and new the army was going to be giving me a hard look. So in July of "66" I found myself at Lackland AFB, TX for boot camp. By November I had finished fire school as well and was on my way to Germany. Bitburg, AFB (now closed.) This base was one of the staging bases for the Germans when they attacked France in WW II. Was training for air rescue when I received orders for RAF Sculthorpe, England. Was stationed there from July 1968 through November 1969. Great duty. Only 17 of us (firemen and security police) on the base for the first 6 months. The base was part of Sec. of state McNamara's forward base concept for the cold war with Russia. When I left there were 150 total personnel. From there on to Shepard AFB, TX. Not my favorite base. Got out July of 1970 and came back to Seattle and started school at Shoreline CC. Received an Associates in Forest Technology and got married. After 4 months desided counting trees was not for me and reentered the Air Force. Went to tech school in Denver for Avionics and was shipped to Mountain Home, Idaho. Thirteen months later I'm in Thailand at Karaut RAFB. Beautiful country. The US and Thia governments got into a disagreement and after 8 months in country I was sent to Nelles AFB, NV and all US bases in Thailand were closed. The mountains were fun, the town okay and eating out cheap. November of 1977 found me on another unit move to RAF Lakenheath. England for three years. Fifty miles south of Sculthorpe. First time overseas for my wife Trish. Great time. Next, Cannon AFB, NM. Back to England for four more years (RAF Upper Heyford). Back to Cannon and retired to Kirkland. Lived there for 18 years and move to Port Hadlock, Washington.

Coast Guard, 4 Years

After about 4 weeks at the new North Seattle CC in 1970, I realized I shouldn't be in college. So I went to see Adrian Hagens about joining the Navy with him. He hadn't yet seen a recruiter. Ultimately we joined the USCG in January 1971. Together we did boot camp and then advance training together then we received different assignments as Yeoman in August 1971.

I went to Kodiak, Alaska until June 1973. From there I was in Oklahoma City until I got off active duty in January 1975.

After doing my own civilian thing in Europe for the rest of 1975, I moved back to Oklahoma City and then to California in 1976. There I rejoined the USCG Reserves... moved back to Seattle 1977 and kept on drilling (reserves) until 1985 when I no longer could fit into my uniform.
