| About Me | "Do what you like. Like what you do."® (Life is Good) "Live while you're alive!" (Marcy Brenner) www.deadgirlwalking.net I'm originally from Mt. Vernon, MO and moved to Springfield, MO when I was 8 (1971). I graduated from Glendale H.S. in 1981 (Brad Pitt attended Kickapoo H.S. in Springfield at the same time.) I earned a B.A. in sociology w/ a journalism emphasis from the Univ. of MO in Columbia in 1985 (Brad Pitt attended Mizzou at the same time, and I'm sure we probably crossed paths at some point on campus or at fraternity parties or the bars). I earned a master's degree in Educ.-College Student Personnel at WIU in 1988 (coursework completed in '87; major paper not finished till '88). I've since taken 18 hours of women’s studies classes and need just one course to have the equivalent of a WS minor. I was an RA & Summer Conference Ass't. for 3 years at Mizzou & worked in res. life at WIU for 13 years. I've been the director of the Women’s Center for 16 years. SURS says I'll be eligible to retire in March 2016, but I'm not planning to do so until sometime after that. Who knows? Time will tell. Meanwhile, I plan to keep enjoying what I do and working hard and playing hard.... I'm a member of the Western Organization for Women exec. board, the WIU Diversity Council, the Univ. Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression, and the Interpersonal Violence Prevention Committee. I advise the Feminist Action Alliance, the Org. of Adult Students for Interaction & Support, and Campus Girl Scouts. Until recently, I served on the Emergency Consultation Team, the Multicultural Center Steering Committee, the Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress Committee, the Eating Concerns Coalition, and the Substance Abuse Prevention Education Grant Comm., and I advised Picture Perfect Modeling Troupe student org. I'm a member and past-president of the Women's Golf League at WIU, and my community involvements include the Macomb Feminist Network, and I also serve on the Service and Justice Outreach Committee at the First Presbyterian Church of Macomb. I have previously served on First Pres's Trustees and Building and Grounds Committee, the League of Women Voters of McDonough County, the Sexual Assault Response Team, and the Paint the Town Pink (breast cancer awareness) planning committee. I was on the HEN Foundation Bd. of Directors for 2 years, promoting & supporting social justice artist activists www.henfoundation.blogspot.com/ ). I served 4 years on the Board of the Girl Scouts of Two Rivers Council (now GS of Central IL), and several years on our local United Way Board. I bought my first house in 1993, then sold it and bought a nicer one closer to campus in 2002. I walk or ride my bicycle to work as much as I can. I have a couple of guest bedrooms and always enjoy having friends and family visit. I've vacationed with friends every year for 27 years for 2 weeks at the Outer Banks of NC (we rent a house on the beach), and I love to travel and to play golf. Recent fun trips with friends include Lake Michigan in Summer 2011, New England (including Provincetown) in Fall 2011, Riviera Maya (near Cancun) in Dec. 2011, a long weekend in New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts in April 2012, Hawaii in July 2012, and Las Vegas in Nov. 2013 for a belated 50th b-day celebration. While I don't have any definite plans for upcoming trips, I would love to take a Mediterranean Cruise in the not-too-distant future and am looking into that for Summer 2015. I have a very bright 23-year-old nephew (my brother Tom's son, Dominic) who graduated from Truman State Univ. last May and works at the St. Louis Science Center, and two adorable and bright "nieces" (our AFS "sister" Rebeca Paz's daughters), Caroline, 15 and Lauren, 13. I'm blessed to have my parents still with us and in relatively good health and living in their own homes in Missouri and Ohio. They will celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary in Feb. I have two cats (Mia, 8, and Sheba, 10) who keep me entertained, plus several outdoor cats who have adopted me. I lost my Dink (19) on Nov. 18, 2009, and her sister, Whitney (20), on Aug. 5, 2011. I was a foster mom to Phoebe, 19, from Jan. 10, 2010 until she died on March 22, 2010. I took...(read more) |
