Paul was a star basketball player at Mount Vernon High School. He played basketball in college at Long Island University, New York, and played in Italy and France. He was a member of the Mount Vernon interfaith choir, and worked at the Mount Vernon city water department. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, a historically African American Greek Letter Fraternity.
