Class of 2003
This two sport, star athlete roamed the halls of Mount Gilead High from 1999-2003. Selvey, who played both basketball and baseball, loomed over opponents standing at 6’5’’ 185lbs. Selvey is best know for what has now become heralded as “The shot heard around the world†in Mt.Gilead. With a close game between the #6 ranked River Valley Vikings and #7 ranked Mt.Gilead Indians Selvey hit a fall away shot to give the Indians the lead. The crowd roared as Selvey raised the roof going back down the court to play defense. This play was nominated for several awards including an ESPY, “Shot of the Year†and the “Are You Serious Baby†awards. Selvey’s best sport was baseball where he was a 3 year letter winner at first base. Fans around Mt.Gilead compared him to none other than the great major leaguer Jim Thome for his power at the plate and ability to make difficult plays in the field look simple. Selvey’s range was so large that the coach would usually put the team’s worst fielder at second base because he knew Selvey could cover him. Joe Ruhl, former head coach during Selvey’s tenure, said “One time in practice Selvey hit the ball so hard it went over the trees! He always hit the cover off the ball!†Selvey has now moved on to becoming the youngest head varsity basketball coach in recent memory around central Ohio. He reigns as the head man for the Danville Blue Devils.
