Favorite School Memory | Here is a great and fond story of my past. I’d like to share with our classamates.. The time was March, 1964. My parents had just moved us to Montebello from Pico Rivera because of my Mom's medical condition. This situation prompted me to transfer to MHS from ERHS. On my first day at MHS I checked in with pre-obtained forms and signatures from my parents. My Father had to work and my Mom couldn't leave home due to illness. Upon checking in, I was confronted with the usual barrage of questions. The lady at the counter said I would have to see the Dean of Boys before the processing could continue. In the interim I was directed to a counselor for class selection and approval. Upon review I was sent to my first class. Just before the end of my last class on the same day. A gentleman in a shirt and tie asked my teacher if he could speak to me. In my class, I heard a few OH’s and awe's from my classmates. He introduced himself as Mr. Ody. He asked me if we could drive to my home and possibly talk to my parents. I told him that my Mom was very ill with terminal cancer and probably wouldn't be able to speak to him. I told him that my Dad would be home at 4:00pm. So he asked me if I had any homework. Which I did. He let me do my homework adjacent to his office. At 4:00 he drove me to my home to talk to my Dad. I went in our home to check on my Mom's condition and say hi to my little Sister. It seemed like their conversation lasted forever, actually it lasted for about half an hour. Later on my Dad told me that they had a great conversation. My Dad let me know that this man was a man of integrity, honor and a veteran. My father also being a WW2 veteran told me to respect this man. He also said that Mr. Ody was an Officer and had been in combat. At that time in my teen age life those were only words. Later on as an adult I was to realize what those words meant. During my short stay until graduation at MHS, Mr. Ody would always check on me and my progress. There were a few times that I needed assistance. I would stop by his office and leave a message as to my concern. Every time he would respond with the much needed help. He even checked to see it I had all the classes necessary for graduation. On one instance he discovered that I was short a class required for graduation. He made sure that I took this class during that summer session. When my Mom passed, he tracked me down and offered his condolences to me, my sister and Dad. On another instance he helped me get a work permit and adjusted my school schedule to my work schedule. He would always call me "Mr. Romero" and I would always call him "Sir." At that time I never knew he had a daughter attending our school. Not until graduation did I find this out. I remember having to grow up and try to be an adult a lot sooner than most of my classmates. I couldn’t get involved in school activities due the passing of my Mom and the added responsibility of helping my Sister and Dad. Most of my school activities were pursued at my last high school. The most memorable part of my experience was having a surrogate Father Image at MHS by the name of Mr. Ody. Every time I see Judi's image or her name I think of her Dad. I will always remember him as a fine man with a difficult job. As I now know, he always took on the difficult jobs. Just as he honorably challenged h...(read more) |
