Jim Hughes

Class of 1975

This Is Part 2 Of My Story. After leaving Champaign, IL I moved to place with my best friend and his girl to start life all over again. I was guided to ask my friend and his girl what jobs are available in this town. She told me about a cooking job at a truck stop. After submitting an application I got hired on. After some time of being in this new town - I moved back in with my parents and siblings. I got hired back on a Bonanza Sirloin Pit in Kankakee, IL. I stayed there for awhile. Then eventually I got hired on at Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee, IL. I worked both jobs for awhile. Then I decided to move to Mississippi and stay with my best friend - my mom's mother. But my girlfriend had other ideas. We ended up living with her family (Parents, siblings) for awhile. I got a job at a blue jeans factory in Mississippi. Eventually the job folded up and moved away. We both got jobs as a couple in Greenwood, MS. This did not last very long. I moved back to my parents home for awhile. My now ex girl moved to Massachusetts where some of her relatives lived. I soon followed her to Massachusetts. I stayed there for awhile - then moved back home when my dad died to try to help my mom keep the house. I stayed briefly with my mom, then stayed briefly with some other friends, then eventually I stayed for a short with one of my sisters. This sister helped me get my own place to stay in. I worked at different jobs. I tried to go to college. I did not finish. I found an ad about driving over the road. Eventually I called the number and talked to someone. I was unsure about driving over the road. I called the number a second time anyway and made arrangements to get started with training to become an over the road truck driver. I passed all the requirements, was sent to Indianapolis to pick up my truck. I drove over the road for the next 8 or 9 months. Then I turned my truck in at North Little Rock, AR. I stayed in a hotel for a few days then started looking around for a place to live. I talked to some guy who gave me a number to a Pastor at a shelter. I called him and after talking to him he said come on over. I did. They were very helpful at this place in finding me a job working with Maybelline in Arkansas. I worked there for awhile then left for California.
