Alumni Stories
Jim Hughes
Class of 1975
I have not done much; yet I have done a lot.
I remember my high school counselor Mr Earnest Monk suggested that I attend a private University or College. I didn't even know what private university or college was. I asked around, but no one seemed to know the answer to my questions. I also remember my dad telling me before I had graduated from Momence High School, Momence, IL that I had to start paying rent. I went to the high school office to see if they had any leads to jobs that I could do. I ended up working for Baker & Taylor Midwest Division in Momence, IL until they either laid me off or fired me for some reason. Later - I went back to the Momence High School Office to see if they had any more leads to jobs that I could do. Eventually I was told that there was a possible job at Case Motors in Momence, IL. I went down and applied and was either called or contacted by the Momence High School office. I worked there for awhile washing cars, going on errands for Case Motors. Next I worked at a place called L&K Friendly Family Restaurant in Kankakee, IL. After that I got hired at Howard Johnson's Restaurant in Kankakee, IL. I also worked at a place called Mario's out on Route 1, not far from Route 17. After that
- I found work at another restaurant called Bonanza Sirloin Pit on Court Street in Kankakee, IL. Later I transferred to a new Bonanza Sirloin Pit that was opening up in Rantoul, IL. While working there I was able to obtain a position at a Howard Johnson's Restaurant in Champaign, IL to help pay my bills.
