| About Me | I am a social worker, and have worked in human services in one way or another for over 25 years. I have been married to John Garwood, Ph.D. (clinical psychologist, licensed) since July 14, 1995, and we have a son, Thomas, who is almost 15 and will start his sophomore year soon. I have a nearly 20-lb. cat named Duane (we let the kid name him). We all coexist cozily in SE Portland where there is art made by all of us all over our walls, stacks and stacks of books, a fantastic purple couch, and more love than anyone can imagine. I graduated from Portland State University in 1988 with a degree in psychology/foreign language combination (French, Spanish). I graduated from Walla Walla College (after two years of traveling over 500 miles a week!) with a Master of Social Work degree in 1998 (finished classes in 1997, so I feel like a member of that class, but it took me another year to finish my thesis). I have worked in women's shelters, shelters for those escaping domestic violence, as an outpatient psychotherapist, for a few years in my own private practice, as a case manager for those with severe and persistent mental illness, and as a mental health therapist in two different inpatient hospital psychiatric units. With all that hands-on experience I love both teaching and continuing to work as a counselor. I love the balance between doing the actual counseling and teaching others how to use some of those same skills. I've taught in a Bachelor of Science in Human Services program, including being an assistant department chair, writing curriculum, and being instrumental in the program's beginnings and development. I was honored to be named University of Phoenix's Bachelor of Science in Human Services (Oregon Campus) Faculty of the Year in 2006. I have a very cool very heavy marble sculpture/award to remember the occasion by. I have begun exercising regularly again, after a partial knee replacement, and can swim a mile in an hour (I am very proud of that). I also like to read (voraciously), knit (especially socks), and sew. In fact, I sew almost all of my own clothes, especially dresses. In my leisure time, I can be found curled up on my couch with tea and a book, or if I venture out I can be found roaming Hawthorne with a stop at Starbucks or impoverishing myself at a fabric or yarn store. I try to avoid Powell's because going there would only be feasible for me if I had as much money as Bill Gates -- I want to buy EVERYTHING......so I use the Multnomah County Library a lot. If you're a former acquaintance, classmate, or student, I'd love to hear from you. If you're a former student I'd especially love to hear what you're doing now that you've left my ...(read more) |
