Favorite School Memory Minutes before our basketball team’s second victory over our archrival Indian Hill High School (which ensured the first EHL championship during our Junior year), a bold member of our class named Rick Whitt, climbed up a ladder, onto the center beam of the Milford High School gym ceiling rafters. In his hands he clutched a large homemade white banner with a big red number one. (Prior to the game, Rick had painted a number one onto an old bed sheet and filled it with confetti.) When the final buzzer sounded ending the game, Rick unfurled the banner from the ceiling rafters pouring confetti at center court at the same time. The sight of this banner helped trigger a celebratory frenzy in which the fans rushed the court and for the fist time in anyone’s memory, the basketball nets were cut down. Arguably, the moment Rick’s banner dropped from the rafters our class was never quite the same. His bold act became the defining moment for the class of 1971. Although not everyone in our class identified with sports, somehow the stellar success of the basketball team had an almost magical uplifting effect on the entire school, some would say the entire community, and made everyone feel like anything is possible. Since most of the members of the basketball team were members of our class, this feeling was especially true for the Class of 1971. The message seemed to be that our class was clearly different. We would not accept the status quo. That it is actually possible for a bunch of average, middle-class kids from a small Ohio town to rise above mediocrity and accomplish much more than what is expected of them. The fact that our class graduated at the tail end of the 1960s, a turbulent era when everyone seemed to be questioning the status quo, gave ...(read more)
About Me Following my graduation in 1971, I was the first person from Milford High School to attend the Cincinnati Art Academy. While attending art school, I was also a student at the University of Cincinnati. After completing the first year of college, I transfered to Morehead State University in Kentucky where I graduated with a BA Degree in Liberal Arts in 1975. I was one of five members of my College Frantenity (Lambda Chi Alpha) at Morehead State University to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during the 1970s. I obtained my commision via the Platoon Leader Class (PLC) program at Quantico. My Officer Basic School Class (Alpha Company, 1-76) was made up of mostly graduates from the U.S. Naval Academy. One of these USNA graduates (who was my roommate for a short period) was Richard (Dick) Rybolt, a good friend from my 1971 graduating class at Milford High School (Dick eventually became a Special Agent with the FBI). After graduating from The Basic School, I received the Military Occupation Specialty of an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Officer and served as a platoon commander in Hawaii with Company D, 3rd Amtrac Battalion attached to the 1st Marine Brigade, FMF. I completed one deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean with the USN Fleet where I participated in "Operation Kangaroo II" during the fall of 1976. At the time, this was the largest amphibious joint military exercise in Australia since World War II. After returning to Hawaii from this deployment, I realized that I was a frustrated "Grunt" at heart. Therefore, with the full support of my commanding officer, I requested to be transfered to the Infantry where I served as a rifle platoon commander with India Company, 3rd Battalian, 3rd Marine Regiment. In this capacity I requested and received a second Military Occupation Specialty of a qualified Infantry Officer. During my service with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment the company was transformed into a "Anti-Terrorist Raider Company." While serving with the 1st Marine Brigade, FMF in Hawaii, I also completed my Master of Arts Degree at Pepperdine University and earned a Black Belt in Japanese Karate. I also served as the Captain of my Battalion's Rifle and Pistol Team and participated in the Pacific Division Matches. As a reward for this, I was given the opportunity go to Sniper School. After leaving active duty, I stayed in the Marine Cops Reserve for 5 years where I was promoted to the rank of Captain. Regarding my civilian career, I spent more than two decades working as a marketing executive for several top "Madison Avenue" advertising agencies. I am a former Vice President with the J. Walter Thompson Company. This is the same advertising agency that creates all of the recruiting ads for the Marine Corps. My advertising clients included The Ford Motor Company, Boeing, Mercedes-Benz, Gulfstream Aerospace and Burger King. While working on the Boeing account, I managed the marketing for the F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter/attack jet. This was my last full-time job with an advertising agency and it was a blast. My clients were all former Naval Aviators and fighter jocks. On my 50th birthday, I retired from the corporate "rat race" to apply what I learned to my own business. I am now an executive coach and business advisor with a passion for creating successful business and leadership transformations exclusively with entrepreneurs and owners of small companies. As a Chair for Vistage International, formerly known as TEC - The Executive Committee, I help business owners stay on course to achieve their professional and personal goals faster, while working fewer hours and improving their personal relationships. Vistage International is the world's leading Chief Executive Organization with over 14,000 members in 16 countries, and enough Alumni members to fill a football stadium. I also work with my wife Kathy in residential real estate within the Sonoma Valley. We specialize in helping clients buy and sell exceptional properties in the California Wine Country where we live, work and play with our Australian Shepherd dog "Sailey." My current non-profit activities include serving on the marketing committee of the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau and serving on the Board of Trustees for the Hospice by the Bay Foundation. I am also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason. In regard to the Marine Corps Veteran Community, I am the current Chairman of the Wine Country Marine Corps Birthday Ball ...(read more)
