About Me | Update: I just turned 59, and I can't believe it! Where did the time go? It's only been a few months now, but damned if 60 isn't already just around the corner. At least my birthday is on the 4th of July, so I've usually had a good time, no matter what age I've been . I remember my 30th. Well, actually I don't, if you catch my meaning. But those days are behind me. I live a very quiet life in the middle of nowhere. I live next door to my mother, who is nearing 80, and I try my best to take care of her, though life, and many poor decisions I've made over the years have taken their toll on me. I'm partially paralyzed on my left side so I walk with a cane. By the way, any "House" fans out there? House's right leg is his bad leg, and he uses his cane on that side. He should be using it on the other side. But I degress. I also lost most of the vision in my left eye in October of '08, because of a bleed-out behind my retina due to a birth defect. Sometimes I feel like God put me here to be his (or her) personal punching bag! But enough of that. I still manage to get a little garden out each summer, mostly tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. I keep our yards mowed. I take Mom into town when she needs groceries, or a permanent, or a doctors appointment. In return she buys my lunch, a deal which suits me perfectly. Just like the hobbit I secretly am, I like as many meals as I can get in a day. :o) Anyway, I love to read and I have a good bit of time to do so. And I've been doing a bit of writing, mostly poetry, but a few short stories, too. I also have a couple of ideas for some books I've been toying with. I guess I've got a pretty good life here, all things considered. It surely could be worse. Though I'm certainly not where I thought I'd be back in my younger, dreaming days. But I don't suppose there are too many people who can say they are, either. Oh, I forgot to mention my dogs. I have 3, all of them rescue dogs, and I'm completely devoted to them. There's Lilly, a mixed terrier and a fierce hunter - she killed a possum (an animal that is about %98 long and sharp teeth) one night when I was still living in Jackson, TN. Of course, she broght it in the house for me as a present. There's nothing like waking up to a dead possum on your bedroom floor at 3 a.m. But she sure was proud! And here in Holladay one morning I heard the most horrible racket. I looked out the window and she was chasing a deer through my yard! A 35lb dog chasing a deer. I kept wondering what she planned to do with it if she ever caught it. Then there's Buddy, who has a bit of border collie in him. He is a very sweet but very shy dog, with the most mournful eyes I've ever seen. A friend of mine quite unintentionally scared the pee out of him (literally, all over my carpet) and since then he won't come around other people, except my mom, whom he warmed to finally after about 3 years. Finally, there's Pearly, my big baby girl. Some friends (actually the guy who scared Buddy), and his wife found her wandering the streets, half starved and with a collar on that was already getting tight. We put ads in the paper and on the radio, but never got a reply, so my friends fattened her up and gave her to me. It was love at first sight. She's a full-blooded Weimereiner. She's gorgeous and a true delight. She's somewhere around a little over 3 years old, but she still acts like a 6-month old pup. When my friends found her there was an electrical cable attached to the leash which she had chewed through, so obviously she was doomed to a life being chained up in some small yard somewhere. Now she has 20+ acres to run around in. I'm sorry that someone lost a pet, but I think Pearly truly moved up in the world. She's precious. As a side note: People, please spay and neuter your pets. It's horrifying how many innocent, loving dogs and cats have to get put down every day because people won't do tha...(read more) |
