About Me Ronald William Ortiz 08/12/1948 Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital Graduated 1966 Miami Carol City High School Entered the US Air Force 1966 through 1968 Went from 130 lbs, 5’ 4” to 175 lbs at 5’ 10” Operated heavy equipment in the Air Force and returned to Miami and worked off of the Palmetto Expressway and outside of Davie in a coral pit for a while and then became a police officer with the City of Miami. During this time I married Joan Mathis from Miami and had a daughter Stephanie. In 1971 we moved to North Port, FL. on the west coast between Ft. Myers and Sarasota. There I was a police officer for the City of North Port for about a year. You would not believe the cultural difference from moving from Miami to a small retirement community in the boondocks. Started working at various jobs from heavy equipment to cookware sales. In 1976 we moved to Chicago and had a son, Michael, then moved back to North Port after about two years and had another daughter, Christine. I became rather crazy and wild during those past two years and ended up in a divorce. My kids lived with Joan in Miami and I moved to Englewood just about ten miles in from N. Port on the Gulf of Mexico. Continuing with the craziness and various business ventures starting with an interior foliage company servicing malls, banks, and businesses, which by the way launched some of the biggest interior-scapers in the foliage industry. I got married again but divorced within a year as my life went overboard…….. I straightened myself out and got back into the real world and got involved in the recycling of paper products and converting it into fuel for FPL facilities in northern Florida. I reached the pinnacle when I landed the Disney account in Orlando. However, I learned about the unscrupulous world of big business and the dishonesty of so called partners who were brought in to complete a scenario that was to be a display for recycling that would have netted millions. The old back stabbing routine ended up with chasing them through the court system as they changed names continually and eventually they lost the Disney account because they could not get convert it properly. Serves them right. Also, taught me not to go into business with anyone anymore. In 1995 I met Cindy Hope, who was the greatest thing to ever happen to me. My life changed for the better and I can’t be any happier. We married in 1996 on the beach and have lived here in Englewood ever since. She has four daughters from a previous marriage, all of them blonde hair and blue eyes, they all are grown up now and we have grand kids. Counting my kids and hers we have thirteen grand kids. We have two and a half acres so when they come over there is plenty of room for them to run around. I went to school to be a real estate property appraiser in 1998 and now own my own business, Ron Ortiz Appraisals. Our oldest and youngest daughters are also property appraisers so we keep it in the family. Soon we will have another generation of appraisers as the grand kids get older. As for special interests I have been coaching Little League through Big League Baseball for over 15 years and Pop Warner Football for some 34 years. I also became involved in drag racing back in 1968, with my first car, a ’68 Road Runner. Later I worked races at Miami Hollywood and when I moved to the west coast I worked races at DeSoto Speedway in Bradenton. Won Track of the Year twice and started to do National Events for the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Purchased my first and only full fledged “race car” in 1988 which I still own and compete with today. It is a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere station wagon with a small 273 cubic inch 2bbl Chrysler engine. It competes in Stock Eliminator (NHRA & IHRA) in the U/SA class. The letter designation U indicates the smallest 8 cylinder with a heavy vehicle. The /SA means Stock Automatic. It covers the quarter mile in 14.3 seconds at 91 MPH. That is pretty good for a stock automobile from the manufacture. A stock 5.0 Mustang runs about 14.3 seconds. I held the U/SA national record twice in the past and have had a good time while being competitive and somewhat successful. My best accomplishments have been Stock Eliminator runner up twice at the NHRA Gatornationals and class winner at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. I also like to cook and eat. I’ll try just about anything and there’s not too much out there that I don’t like. My favorite foods in order, are gator, seafood including...(read more)
