About | GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Mrs. Valerie L. (Portewig) Taylor, 36, of Greencastle, Pa., died at 6:50 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital, following a long illness. Born Oct. 13, 1971, in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of Connie L. and Mildred (Flowers) Portewig of Newport News. She lived her early life in the Newport News area. Mrs. Taylor was a graduate of Menchville High School in Newport News. She later graduated from Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pa., with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. She and her husband, Mark K. Taylor, were married on June 21, 1997, in Newport News. They moved to Greencastle following their marriage. Mrs. Taylor was currently working for Franklin County Health and Human Services as a caseworker. She was a member of Denbigh Christian Church, Newport News, and the Buchanan Trail Quilters. Mrs. Taylor adored her puppy, Oscar, and her 1955 Chevy Bel Air. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by her sisters, Laura Gyori and husband, Robert, of Eureka, Mo., and Teresa Trapani and husband, Sean, of Saluda, Va.; her nephews, RJ, Ethan, Jacob, Brandon, Sean Jr., Aaron and Zachary; and her nieces, Michelle and Rachael. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Saturday evening, in the funeral home. A second memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, in Denbigh Christian Church, Newport News. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
