A 1969 C L McLane High School Graduate,

Alfred " Freddy" Ricardo
May 12, 1951 - October 25, 2020
Fresno, California - Freddy Ricardo was born May 12, 1951 to Librado and Ricarda Ricardo; he was the 6th of 8 children. Freddy was a simple person who lived his simple life to the fullest. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to anyone who ever had the privilege of meeting him; his example of hard-work, honesty and generosity was clear to all and will serve as an endearing life-lesson for his entire family, for whom he always worked and sacrificed and loved. Freddy was a very hard worker. After retiring from Fresno County, he did what he could to help family and friends with what was requested from them..
He loved fishing, coaching and playing baseball. He shared his love and passion with all his family, friends, and those who crossed paths with him.
While attending McLane High School in the '60s, Freddy was already a storied, champion baseball player by the time he had graduated in 1969. He was an outstanding pitcher on the high school baseball team. He threw several no-hitter games earning the attention of several newspaper reporters and a few semi-pro scouts. His natural talent and love for the game kept him constantly involved in the community; either as a player or coach in Fresno's many baseball leagues simply as that friend-of-the-coach in the stands. He was well known throughout the local softball community. He played many years of softball, even up until the time of his death; he was still involved with a senior slow pitch league.
Freddy loved life and people. He could talk about anything under the sun. Friendly and charming, his conversation and personal stories could extend and include diverse names from all walks of life from the whole Central Valley. Yet all who knew him, no matter their social status or material wealth, will speak of the same man: humorous and witty, industrious and resourceful, strong but gentle in spirit, and eyes that would laugh with the rest of his smiling face. He lived a simple life as an untiring handyman who never met a project that he would not only complete but left in a stronger condition than it was when he found it. The same can be said for the love he forged with family and friends.

Freddy succumbed to injuries suffered in an auto accident on 10/25/2020. He is survived by his son Dominic, and his grandson, Librado. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Lucy, Tom (Jenny), Alice, David (Pat), Patty, and Ralph (Anita), and sister-in-law Esther. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Librado and Ricarda Ricardo, and brother Manuel Ricardo.

Rest in Heavenly Peace

He was a member of the Fresno Senior Softball League.

"Fred was always at the ball park kidding with everyone. He had been playing off and on over the past two years and was a staple in the 68 Tuesday morning league. 2020 has really been a mess and sad time for the FSSL."

A car being driven by 69-year-old Fred Ricardo was rammed by a CHP patrol car two weeks ago at the intersection of Kearney Boulevard and Brawley Avenue. Ricardo died after spending three days in the hospital.

His family has retained a lawyer, believing CHP hasn't been entirely honest about the accident.

Ricardo is described to be the kind of man who always came through for friends and family — whether it be a broken pipe, or fixing something on the roof.

Family and friends of Fred Ricardo held a vigil to honor him Thursday morning.
While laughing, his son Dominic Ricardo and his brother David Ricardo recalled a time he fell through the roof during repairs.

Fred Ricardo's selflessness is a quality Dominic Ricardo admired the most.

"My father would work odd jobs, even after being retired, to make sure that we would have money in our pockets," Dominic Ricardo said. "So my son and I could go out and buy whatever we needed."

Dominic Ricardo still has many questions about the day of his father's accident. In a press release, CHP said officer Bradley Bowman was driving north on Brawley Avenue toward Kearney Boulevard at an unknown speed around 2 p.m. on Oct. 22. At the time, Fred Ricardo was approaching the intersection on Kearney Boulevard in his truck and trailer.

At that intersection, Brawley Avenue has stop signs while Kearney Boulevard doesn't. For whatever reason, Bradley ran the stop sign on Brawley and drove directly into Fred Ricardo, according to the press release.

The Ricardo family has been trying to get answers ever since. Dominic Ricardo said he was initially informed Bradley was chasing a suspect at the time, but now there's no mention of that. Also, he said his father was sent to the hospital as a John Doe, despite having his wallet with proper identification inside.

"I have an attorney now. We want honesty, we want transparency, we want the truth," Dominic Ricardo said. "Above all, we want justice because that's what America is really based on."

He'll never forget what happened to his father, but Dominic Ricardo does forgive Bradley. He said his father would've done the same.
