| About Me | A short story I published began, sort of like this: His daddy was a prize fighter, Marine, Police Officer. His mama was a school teacher. He was a street fighter who practiced law. I pick juries and try lawsuits. I train 40 rounds a week during boxing season. Have ridden a bicycle across Iowa 8 times on RAGBRAI. In my professional life I have represented poor, small, against rich, big, citzen against State, individual against group, disadvantaged against privileged. Early in my practice I appeared a number of times for the Iowa Bar Association with a group of new lawyers speaking to Law School Seniors about their future, and bridging the gap between no experience and experience. The speakers before me touted the benefits of working for a large firm, and when it became my turn I told them they did not need a job, they needed a client. I have been a sole praticioner most of my practice, trying my first case 11 days or so after passing the Bar Exam. Between September 1st and December 1st of '09 I have tried 6 jury trials. Searching my name in the Archives of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier will give a snapshot of my activity since mid 90's. Free time would be a good thing I am sure, and if I was to spend it with one I enjoyed, I'd find some, but now work. I had a job once, '73 or '74 to '77 or so, Receiving Clerk B at Westinghouse Learning and Leisure Time Corporation in Iowa City, Iowa. I enjoyed it. Having a job is like being maried, it is something everybody ought to do once. I've never seen a reason to do it again, but surley don't regret the perspective it has given me on the world. I'm a middle aged upwardley moble professional who spends my life doing what I choose, what I am trained to do, and what I like. Haven't made any money to speak of beyond staying in the game, but I am who I am. How I spent my last vacation... I have traveled coast to coast, boarder to boarder, numerous times; I have worked and traveled in the Asian Republics, Rusia and Kazakstan; I have crossed the mediteranean and saled the leward islands. I like travel, and I like sleep. I like to practice my profession and I like to quietly look into the face of my lover as she sleeps. The word vacation is a very big word for me. I spent my last vacation alive. My favorite dish or recipe... Filet Mignon, Medium Well, Slow Baked in a 225 oven, in Butter laced with Garlic, Oregano, Sage and Cayenne. My last good read... The last motion filed by an adversary or judge's order. That is what I read. The mail, briefs, motions and orders. The most interesting fiction I have read in years is what I write. My top 3 favorite movies... Any Star Treck Once Upon a Time in the West Sweet Sweet-Back's Bad Ass Song I've lived on the road in Europe and the US, sleeping in ditchs and on beachs; I've lived so that I am comfortable being by myself, alone, with only what I could carry; I have learned that I need warmth; I need dry; I need food; I need some money; and, as I have been alone most places I have been, I have learned that I need to fight. These are the things I couldn't possibly live without. My personal soundtrack... Doors Moody Blues Howlin Wolf Pachelbel's Canon My motto... Life is an infinite regression to the more and more subtle. What my best friend would say about me... The same I would say of her. Thanks If I could be anywhere right now, I would be... Right where I am. If I want to be somewhere else, I'll go there, or be there. On my coffee table you will...(read more) |
